[Commercial Times] Fecula Biotech Focuses on Resistant Starch Encapsulation Technology
Miles Chen, CEO of Fecula Biotechnology, believes that there are currently no health foods on the market that encapsulate probiotics using resistant starch. Therefore, the company is utilizing the resistant starch components found in green bananas for the development of new drugs and health foods.
Founded in 2019 and headquartered in the Nankang Technology Park Incubation Center in Tainan, Fecula Biotechnology has been actively developing functional ingredients for health foods through the use of agricultural resources. To date, the company has successfully developed ingredients such as banana resistant starch, banana peel extract powder, concentrated extract powder of calamondin, fish scale calcium, and strawberry leaf extract for use in health food and skincare product development.

In 2020, Fecula Biotechnology received angel investment from the National Development Fund and was listed on the Emerging Stock Market in 2022. Their core technology involves extracting resistant starch components from green bananas and developing different specifications of resistant starch for use in health foods and oral new drug development. In the application of health foods, the focus is on proprietary probiotic encapsulation combined with the development of functional ingredients. CEO Miles Chen stated that this technology has also been applied to new drug development, such as an oral liver cancer vaccine and an oral formulation for microbiota transplantation. The strawberry leaf extract they have developed has completed cosmetic ingredient development with support from the SBIR program and has undergone human clinical trials, confirming its efficacy in inhibiting melanin production, moisturizing, and improving skin firmness.

Miles Chen believes that there are currently no health foods on the market that encapsulate probiotics using resistant starch, and there are very few health foods that contain significant amounts of resistant starch. In addition to providing a barrier effect against gastric acid, bile salts, and digestive enzymes, resistant starch can also supply nutrients to "exogenous" gut bacteria, enhancing their survival and colonization effectiveness.
Green bananas have the highest content of resistant starch among all fruits and vegetables. Taiwan was once known as the "Kingdom of Bananas," and leveraging this advantage is the company's motivation for developing banana resistant starch. By utilizing the property of resistant starch to resist gastric acid, bile salts, and digestive enzyme breakdown, the company aims to develop proprietary encapsulation technology for resistant starch and establish different specifications for its application in new drug and health food development.
